Raiders Road Forest Drive
The South West Coastal 300 is one of Scotland’s most underrated road trips. This 300-mile loop through Dumfries and Galloway and into Ayrshire takes in quiet roads, dramatic castles, forest drives, rugged headlands, peaceful beaches and largely undiscovered views.
With so much to see, a little planning goes a long way. If you prefer a slower pace, allow seven days for extra time to take detours and linger longer at each stop.
DAY 1: Caerlaverock Castle to Kirkcudbright
DRIVE TIME: 1 Hour 40 Mins
OVERNIGHT: Silver Craigs Campsite
STOPS: Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries, Southerness Beach & Lighthouse, Sandyhills Beach, Dalbeattie Forest Town Wood, Kirkcudbright.
Start your trip with a bang at Caerlaverock Castle, a fairytale 13th-century castle surrounded by a moat. Stop off for coffee in Dumfries, where you can also explore the poet Robert Burns’ house. Back on the road, you’ll come to some superb sandy beaches with cracking views – Southerness and Sandyhills Beaches. They offer great walks, swimming and rock pooling, depending on what you fancy.
An afternoon stop-off at Dalbeattie Forest is a good chance to stretch your legs and discover a peaceful loch in the heart of the woods. There are lots of trails to choose from including a short-ish one-hour trail. Round off your first day at Kirkcudbright, a vibrant harbour town that has attracted artists for many years. There are plenty of art galleries to see and the local museum is a great way to explore the history of this unique town.
Caerlaverock Castle
DAY 2: Threave Castle to Bladnoch
DRIVE TIME: 1 Hour 30 Mins
OVERNIGHT: Creebridge Caravan Park or Drumroamin Farm
STOPS: Threave Castle, Red Kite Centre Laurieston, Raiders Road Forest Drive, Red Deer Range & Wild Goat Park, Grey Mare’s Tail, Newton Stewart, Bladnoch Distillery
The day begins with Threave Castle: a true highlight that has to be seen to be believed! From here, it’s a short drive to The Red Kite Centre Laurieston, a sanctuary for the majestic birds of prey which you can see up close.
Hop back on the road and head to Raiders Road Forest Drive, winding through 10 miles of the stunning Galloway Forest Park.
Driving on, you’ll find Red Deer Range & Wild Goat Park, a great place to feed red deer, Scotland’s largest land mammal. Head into the afternoon with a woodland waterfall trail at Grey Mare’s Tail near Newton Stewart. It’s a beautiful spot to recharge in the great outdoors.
Reward yourself with coffee and cake in the charming local town of Newton Stewart. Finally, toast to a top-notch day at Bladnoch Distillery, where they’ve been making Lowland whisky for over 200 years.
Raiders Road Forest Drive
DAY 3: Wigtown to Portpatrick
DRIVE TIME: 3 Hours
OVERNIGHT: Castle Bay Holiday & Residential Park
STOPS: Wigtown, St Ninian’s Chapel, Back Bay, Mull of Galloway Lighthouse Visitor Centre, Port Logan, Ardwell Bay Beach, Portpatrick, Dunskey Castle
The morning starts in Wigtown, a pilgrimage site for book lovers! At nearby St Ninian’s Chapel, you’ll find a dramatic coastal landscape perfect for exploring. Further along the coast, you’ll come to Back Bay – a sweeping sandy beach backed by dunes, towering cliffs and dramatic rock formations.
Now you’re approaching the most southerly part of Scotland, and it’s here you’ll find the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse. This is a brilliant stop to see incredible coastal panoramas, dolphins and seabirds.
Don’t miss nearby Port Logan – a picturesque fishing village that’s well worth exploring. Follow it up with afternoon stop at Ardwell Bay Beach for a walk or a spot of rock pooling.
Enjoy a pick-me-up at a café or pub in Portpatrick and enjoy the exceptional views out towards Northern Ireland and beyond.
From here, it’s a short, steep walk to Dunskey Castle – a walk that’s worth the effort for the incredible ruins and coastal views.
Portpatrick
DAY 4: Stranraer to Ayr
DRIVE TIME: 2 Hours 30 Mins
OVERNIGHT: Ayr Craigie Gardens Club Campsite
STOPS: Stranraer, Kitchen Coos & Ewes, Girvan Beach, Dalquharran Castle, Culzean Castle, Dunure Castle, Ayr & Ayr Beach
The morning begins in Stranraer, a historic town on the shores of Loch Ryan that’s packed with history and activities. Then hop into a trailer and see some Highland cows up close with a tour on a traditional Scottish farm. Book ahead with Kitchen Coos & Ewes, where all tours end with a cuppa and a sweet treat.
Around lunchtime, over to Girvan, which combines a historic town centre with stunning coastal scenery.
Spend the afternoon castle-hopping between Dalquharran, Culzean and Dunure Castles. They make for a great mix of rich history, romantic ruins and terrific views.
In the late afternoon, head to Ayr to enjoy its independent eateries – and maybe even a takeaway to enjoy on Ayr Beach, with stunning views out towards the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig.
Girvan
DAY 5: Dalcairney to Moffat
DRIVE TIME: 3 Hours
OVERNIGHT: Moffat Club Site
STOPS: Dalcairney Falls, Crawick Multiverse, Mennock Pass, Wanlockhead, Drumlanrig Castle & Gardens, Moffat, Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve.
The final day of this epic road trip begins at Dalcairney Falls, a waterfall surrounded by gorgeous countryside. Follow this up with a visit to Crawick Multiverse, a lands art installation that’s totally unique!
The next stretch of the drive takes you through Mennock Pass, where the road winds through rolling hills, open valleys and peaceful countryside. This really is the scenic route!
Stop off at Wanlockhead, a village that’s 1,531 feet above sea level, where you can enjoy lunch at the highest pub.
Crawick Multiverse
For a taste of grandeur, visit Drumlanrig Castle & Gardens. At its heart stands a hugely impressive ancestral home, which you can explore, along with rolling grounds.
Mid-afternoon beckons, and the town of Moffat is the perfect place: check out the local eateries and pick up some famous Moffat toffee!
Finish up your road trip with a visit to Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve, where you’ll find one of the tallest waterfalls in the UK.
