The North Coast 500, Scotland
As many of you already know this has become a popular road trip destination for many, but if you’re wondering if it’s worth it, we can certainly say that it is! Don’t let the talk of crowds scare you off. Yes, there might be some traffic, but if you visit during the shoulder seasons, you can do your best to avoid the worst of it.
Typically starting and ending in the city of Inverness, the 516-mile route winds its way around the northernmost coastlines. If you take a look in our guidebook (you can purchase it here) we’ve recommended completing the route anticlockwise. This way the scenery will only continue to get better as you make your way along the route.

Don’t miss out on some of our top highlights whilst exploring. The Whaligoe Steps, Castle Sinclair, Kylesku Bridge, and the breathtaking Wailing Widow Falls, just to name a few are all a must-visit. A little friendly advice: bring a good camera – you’ll want to capture some photos of these iconic spots to look back on. Unless, of course, you plan on visiting again, which is pretty likely!
If you decide to plan a road trip here, we recommend setting aside at least five full days. Though, a week to ten days will allow you to enjoy your trip at a more leisurely pace. You can also extend your stay to explore more of the Isle of Skye or Fort William and venture on to explore the Outer Hebrides.
