Next, let’s dive into planning your weekend in Edinburgh
With an abundance of places to see, things to do, and popular foodie spots to try it can be pretty difficult to decide what to do each day. So, we’ve made it a whole lot easier with our brief itinerary below. You can also find more information in our Couples Weekends Away UK Guide Book.

Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Edinburgh

Afternoon: A Royal Start

After arriving in Edinburgh, begin your weekend with a visit to Edinburgh Castle, perched high on Castle Rock. This iconic fortress offers breathtaking views of the city and is home to the Crown Jewels. Take the guided tour to delve into the castle’s rich history.

After exploring the castle, stroll down the Royal Mile, the historic heart of Edinburgh. This mile-long street stretches from the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, lined with shops, pubs, and historic sites. Don’t miss St. Giles’ Cathedral where you can admire its stunning architecture and beautiful stained-glass windows.

Evening: Ghostly Adventures or Romantic Cinema

Later on, why not embark on a ghost tour to explore Edinburgh’s dark side. The Real Mary King’s Close offers a fascinating underground tour, revealing the city’s hidden streets and stories of plague, murder, and mystery.

Or if ghosts aren’t your thing, opt for a romantic evening at the Dominion Cinema instead. This charming venue showcases a mix of modern and classic films, with cosy sofas, privacy screens, and evening table service – perfect for a memorable date night!

Royal Mile

Day 2: The True Scottish Experience

Morning: Discover Edinburgh’s Vibrant Arts Scene

Start with a visit to the Scottish National Gallery to admire some of its impressive art collections. If you have a little more time, take a short walk to the Royal Botanic Gardens. With beautifully landscaped gardens and diverse plant collections, it’s the perfect place to unwind.

Afternoon: Scotch Whiskey Experience

Located near the Royal Mile, this attraction offers tours where you can learn about Scotland’s iconic whisky-making heritage. More importantly, you can enjoy tastings of various whiskies and engage in interactive experiences to learn the history behind this celebrated spirit. It’s a must-visit for whisky enthusiasts, and those curious about Scotland’s cultural traditions!

Evening: Culinary Delights at Timberyard Restaurant

Nestled in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town and housed in a converted warehouse, Timberyard Restaurant blends rustic charm with contemporary design. Indulge in their seasonal menus showcasing the best of Scottish produce for a truly memorable dining experience.

After dinner, catch a performance at the Edinburgh Playhouse or explore the lively nightlife in the Grassmarket and Cowgate areas. Here you’ll find a variety of pubs, clubs, and live music venues (Stramash Live Music Bar is one of our favourites).

Day 3: Take in the Sights

Morning: Scenic Strolls

Start your day with a hike up Arthur’s Seat, that offers stunning views of Edinburgh and beyond. The hike is moderately challenging but well worth the effort for the breathtaking views of the city.

After your hike, enjoy afternoon tea on the Red Bus Bistro. A vintage red bus serving homemade treats whilst passing some of the city’s most famous landmarks.

Afternoon: Camera Obscura and World of Illusions

Located in the heart of the city, this attraction offers a unique blend of optical illusions, interactive exhibits, and panoramic views from the rooftop. It’s a fascinating experience for all, perfect for adding a touch of magic to your Edinburgh weekend adventure.
