The Best Walks, Things To Do & Places to Stay with Your Pup in the Lake District
In addition to being among the most beautiful places in the UK, the Lake District is also one of the most dog friendly. There’s an abundance of walking paths that would exhaust even the most active four-legged companions. But more importantly several country pubs for some much-needed respite. Plus, a tonne of fun activities for you and your pup to enjoy! The Lakes really is a tail-wagging paradise.
You can spend a long weekend doing the best bits if you’re short on time. Alternatively, a week (which, believe us, you’ll want to) gives you the chance to slow things down and explore lesser-known trails. I guess that also means a little more time to linger in the Lakeside pubs, bonus!

So, to help you start planning, we’ve pulled together this guide to the top dog-friendly activities, excursions, and places to stay in the Lake District.
But before we get into it, if you’re looking for even more travel inspiration for days out with your canine companion, take a look at our Dog-friendly Weekends Away UK Guidebook. It features over 52 dog-friendly destinations (yes that’s one for every week of the year) so you’ll never get stuck on where to venture next!
Top Dog-walking Spots In The Lake District:
Catbells:
One of the best walks in the Lakes, and a must for anyone visiting the area! This 3.5-mile circular trail serves up stunning views across Keswick, Derwentwater and Borrowdale. The path is manageable for most fitness levels, although there is a short scrambling section. Nothing too wild, and you can skip it by taking the gentler south ascent. For a fun twist, hop on the Keswick Launch cruise to Hawes End jetty, and arrive at the trail via boat!

Tom Gill Waterfall:
A short but beautiful 2.5km circular route starting at the Glen Mary Bridge National Trust car park. The path folllows a quaint stream before gradually ascending to the dramatic Tom Gill Waterfall. The waterfall drops 30ft into the ravine below. Continue to the picturesque Tarn Hows where you can extend your walk (ideal for those more energetic pooches).
Bainshead Quarry:
For something a little off the beaten path, head to this old slate quarry. Its crystal-clear waters and accidental waterfall give it a magical, almost otherworldly feel. With the towering Old Man of Coniston in the background, it’s an atmospheric place for a peaceful stroll.

Orrest Head:
If you’re not much of a hiker, this one is for you! Orrest Head is a gentle 3.5km round trip from Windermere, and it only takes about 20 minutes to reach the summit. The end result? Beautiful panoramic views over Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells. It ticks all the boxes – short, sweet, and extremely rewarding.
Buttermere:
Not a fan of a steep climb? Instead, take the leisurely walk around the lake at Buttermere, considered one of the most beautiful in the Lake District. The circular route takes 1-2 hours to complete (depending on your speed) and is packed with incredible views and photo-worthy fells. Dogs can roam off lead in certain sections. Start your walk from the National Trust car park; it’s free for members but can get particularly busy at weekends and during the summer.
